Speaker Notes: Maryanne Koller

School Board Meeting, October 28, 2015

Dr. Morris and board members,

My name is Maryanne Koller and I am the parent of Zachary, who is in the 4th grade at Azevada in the Mandarin Immersion program. I have lived in the Azevada attendance area since 2001 and saw many of my neighbors attend the school through the years. When my son started school in 2011, I was excited to learn that my home school offered the opportunity to learn a new and different language, as we speak English only at home.

My son’s class was the 2nd Mandarin Immersion class at Azevada so I have witnessed a lot of growth. I see such a positive impact at Azevada with each year that passes, and this is definitely a result of the growing Mandarin Immersion program.  Parents are invested in the school, and it is infectious! We are living in a culture of “anything is possible” and it is working!

I have been the PTA president for the past 3 years and I have the opportunity to really get to know many students and their families at the school- both in the English and Mandarin programs. This is my school and my neighborhood, so to see so many people from all over Fremont want to enroll in Azevada each year, and contribute to the success is amazing. Every year PTA membership increases, as does overall parent participation, and all of our programs benefit. The Mandarin Immersion program attracts people who are there for the long term- it enables all of us to become invested.

We are dedicated to making our school the best it can be for everyone. I am proud to say that my son attends Azevada Elementary and I thank the Fremont Unified School district for making this opportunity possible, Mrs. Diamond and all the staff at Azevada for their continued support, and the pioneering group of parents and community members who have worked so hard since the beginning.

My son, Zachary, would like to say a few words as well if you don’t mind. Dr. Shao, would you mind translating once he is finished?
